โ€œAnyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-comeโ€ (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

How does one avoid the melachah of Borer on Shabbat?

One does not transgress the melachah of borer if three conditions are all met: [1]

a. One must separate the ochel (the edible item, or the wanted item, also known as the โ€œgoodโ€) from the pesolet (the non-edible, or unwanted item, also referred to as the โ€œbadโ€).[2]

b. One has intention to separate the item for immediate use.[3]

c. It must be separated by hand and not by using a utensil, since separating the good from the bad by hand is considered as a manner of regular consumption.[4]

A way to remember these rules is by the mnemonic "ืื™ืœ ืžืฉื•ืœืฉ":

ื = ืื•ื›ืœ, Food

ื™ =ื™ื“, By hand

ืœ = ืœืืœืชืจ, immediately
