The Daily Halacha Moment - Dancing On Shabbat 🕺

Question:
May one dance on Shabbat?
Answer:
Even though singing is permitted on Shabbat, the Chachamim enacted a prohibition against dancing on Shabbat, out of concern that one might repair an instrument in order to provide musical accompaniment. [1] The dancing that is prohibited on Shabbat is dancing where one is skipping, hopping or jumping. Walking around in a circle while singing is not included in the prohibition of dancing on Shabbat. [2] Furthermore, one may not dance or clap even during a seudat mitzvah, such as a shevah berachot meal or a brit milah that is on Shabbat. [3]
Nonetheless, even though dancing and clapping are generally forbidden on Shabbat and Yom Tov, one may dance and clap on Simchat Torah, even when it is on Shabbat, since Simchat Torah is an exception to the general rule. [4]
