Question:
May one listen to music while exercising or working out during the Three Weeks?
Answer:
Excellent question.
Some say that one is permitted to listen to music while exercising, provided that one is doing so to help him exercise (such as to stick to the rhythm) and not for enjoyment. Meaning, when music is not being played for enjoyment, but only for “keeping the beat,” there is no prohibition. Also, one should ensure that the intention is not to enjoy the music, but rather to keep the beat of one's exercise. That being said, one should not choose music that one particularly enjoys.
However, to satisfy all opinions one should try to listen to acapella instead. It's good to note that some refrain from listening altogether, one should follow one's custom.
