Music & Working Out During The Three Weeks

The Daily Halacha Moment - Working Out, Music & The Three Weeks 🏃 🎶

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן ‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one listen to music while exercising or working out during the Three Weeks?

Answer:

Excellent question.

Some say that one is permitted to listen to music while exercising, provided that one is doing so to help him exercise (such as to stick to the rhythm) and not for enjoyment. Meaning, when music is not being played for enjoyment, but only for “keeping the beat,” there is no prohibition. Also, one should ensure that the intention is not to enjoy the music, rather to keep the beat of ones exercise. That being said, one should not choose music that one particularly enjoys.

However, to satisfy all opinions one should try to listen to acapella instead. It's good to note that some refrain from listening altogether, one should follow one's custom.
