Question:
What exactly is Shabbat HaGadol?
Answer:
The Shabbat before Pesach is known as Shabbat HaGadol. [1] This Shabbat is called Shabbat HaGadol to commemorate the miracle that took place on the Shabbat before Bnei Yisrael left Mitzrayim, which was the tenth of Nissan. At that time, each Jewish household was commanded to bring a lamb into its home to be used as the korban Pesach. Although the Egyptians worshipped these lambs, Hashem miraculously rendered the Egyptians powerless to stop Bnei Yisrael from sacrificing them. [2]
Despite the requirement to begin learning the halachot of Pesach from thirty days before, it is customary for the rabbi of every community to instruct his community about the halachot of Pesach on Shabbat HaGadol. [3] When erev Pesach is on Shabbat, the rabbi should deliver these instructions on the Shabbat before erev Pesach. [4]
Similarly, on Shabbat HaGadol, it is customary to greet each other by saying Shabbat HaGadol Mevorach. [5]
