Question:
What exactly is the Melachah of Boneh (building)?
Answer:
One of the 39 forbidden Melachot of Shabbat is the melachah of Boneh (building).
The main structure of the Mishkan was constructed with forty-eight planks, each overlaid with gold. Each of these planks were erected and connected by a series of sockets, rings and bars. Assembling these planks in order to form the structure of the Mishkan was the melachah of Boneh. This aspect of the melachah includes building, forming, assembling, of any kind of permanent structure. The structure is not limited to something that one lives in, but also includes making utensils and functional items. Another aspect of Boneh, was done by placing the covering on the Mishkan, which is known as making an Ohel – creating a shelter.
There are many other activities that are rabbinically forbidden under the category of Boneh, even though one does not actually build anything.
Any part of a structure that is being fixed, even by simply sealing up a hole in a wall, is considered Boneh. [1]
