Question:
May one clean off a stain from one's garment on Shabbat?
Answer:
If one soaked his garment purposely in order to clean it, the garment may no longer be worn even after Shabbat. However, if the garment got dirty again, then one may clean it (after Shabbat) and one may use it again since is no longer benefiting from the cleaning that one did on Shabbat.[1] If it was cleaned by accident, such as if one did not know it was prohibited to do so, or if one did not know it was Shabbat, then it is permitted to use it after Shabbat.[2]
The prohibition of wetting garments applies only to clear and odorless liquids, since there is an incentive for one to want to wring out the garment in order to use it. Therefore, garments may get wet with colored, dirty, or malodorous liquids on Shabbat. This is because, these liquids leave a stain and the garment remains soiled even after drying. Thus, there is no reason to fear that one will come to wring it out on Shabbat.[3] Even soaking a garment that is made out of synthetic material that can retain water is not permitted on Shabbat. [4] Similarly, even soaking a garment that is made out of synthetic material that can retain water is not permitted on Shabbat. [5]
