Contacting a Doctor On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Contacting a Doctor On Shabbat in Order to Find Out if There Is a Danger 🤳

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one contact a doctor on Shabbat to see if there is a danger?

Answer:

One may call or even drive to a doctor to get medical advice if one is unsure whether one is in a life-threatening situation. This is even permitted if one is unsure if the doctor is available. [1] Similarly, one who is considered a choleh sheyesh bo sakanah (a person who is life-threatening sick) does not have to go to the closest doctor or hospital and one may instead travel to a hospital that is farther away if the doctor there is considered a better doctor and one will receive better treatment. However, one may not travel to a hospital farther away strictly because of financial considerations.[2]
