Question:
May one create creamy mixtures on Shabbat?
Answer:
It is permitted to make mayonnaise on Shabbat (by mixing together eggs, oil and spices until they thicken) on condition that one does not mix the ingredients vigorously and that one makes it immediately prior to the meal that he wants to eat it. [1] Ashkenazim are stringent. [2] Similarly, one may stir instant coffee granules with some water until it becomes creamy. However, it may only be done with a spoon, or other utensil that is not normally used to do so, and one may not stir vigorously.[3] Furthermore, One may add oil to hummus or lemon juice to mayonnaise, since by doing so, one makes the mixture thinner.[4] Likewise, it is permitted to mix mayonnaise and ketchup.[5]
