How Much Does One Need To Eat In Order to Recite A Berachah Achrona?

The Daily Halacha Moment - Amount Of Food 🍲

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

How much does one need to eat in order to recite a berachah achrona?

One is only obligated to recite a Berachah Achrona on food if one eats a Kezayit (around 27 grams for Sefardim) of food in Kedi Achilat Pras. [1]

How Long is Kedi Achilat Pras?

According to Maran Rabbenu Ovadia Yosef Ztzl for Sefardim Kedi Achilat Pras is 7.5 minutes. Which means in order for one to be obligated in reciting a Berachah Achrona one needs to eat a Kezayit within 7.5 minutes. [2]

However, According to Ashkenazic poskim one should eat the amount of food within 4 minutes. [3]

(It seems that Maran retracted from what was written in Yechave Da’at 1:17). See also Yalkut Yosef 207:1 see bracket there.

Vezot HaBeracha (pg 6) writes that many poskim (and quotes Rav Elyashiv as one of them) agree.
