Injured Animals & Tzad

The Daily Halacha Moment - Injured Animals & Tzad 🐶

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

Are injured animals that cannot run subject to the Melachah of Tzad?

Answer:

Even trapping an injured animal that cannot run away is rabbinically prohibited because of Tzad. [1]

Therefore, one may not pick up an injured animal in order to save it from dying on Shabbat, as doing so would be considered Tzad. [2] (It's good to note, that animals are Muktzeh on Shabbat and may not be moved. See Shulchan Aruch 308:39; Mishnah Berurah 308:146)

[2]. See in Halichot Shabbat, Malka, vol. 2, p. 384 who states that there are three possible ways that would be permitted to save the animal. 1. One can ask a non-Jew to take it or call the appropriate authorities that can take care of it. 2. Two people can lift the animal at once. 3. One can pick up the animal in a backhanded manner. In the case where the animal is one’s personal pet, and it is totally domesticated, then it would even be permitted to pick it up normally and bring it home.
