The Daily Halacha Moment - The Melachah Of Tzad 🐶
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן
העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
What is the Melachah of Tzad?
One of the 39 Melachot is Tzad, also known as trapping.
In order to obtain hides for the coverings of the Mishkan, the animals first had to be captured.
Some commentaries explain that trapping was needed in the Mishkan as well for capturing the chilazon in order to use dye techelet.
This is the basis of the melachah of Tzad.
As will be explained in the coming days, Tzad is dependant on the type of species, and the type of confinement that it is being subjected to, as not every species or confinement is prohibited.
The biblical melachah of Tzad applies only to species that are usually trapped for some purpose, such as birds, deer or fish.
It is only rabbinically prohibited to trap an animal that is not normally trapped.
In the coming days we will bzh be discussing more Halachot regarding the Melachah of Tzad.
. Mesechet Shabbat 73a.
. See Aruch HaShulchan 316:1. The Gemara in Shabbat 75a also states that one who traps a chilazon has transgressed Tzad. This is also the opinion of the Rambam 10:19. See also in Tal Orot, melechet Tzad.
. Shulchan Aruch 316:3; Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 5, p. 94.
. Shulchan Aruch 316:3.
