Proper Conduct At The Kotel

The Daily Halacha Moment - Proper Conduct At The Kotel

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What is the proper conduct needed at the Kotel?

Answer:

When visiting the Kotel, a person must approach with awe and reverence, for it is not merely a historical site but a place imbued with holiness. Our Sages teach that the Shechinah never departed from the Western Wall, and therefore it must be treated with the same respect as a Beit HaKnesset—and, in many ways, even more so. Out of this awareness, one should refrain from eating, drinking, or engaging in idle chatter in its vicinity, just as one would in a synagogue.[1] In addition, appropriate and modest dress is required, reflecting the sanctity of the place and the honor due to it. Likewise, one should be mindful of posture and demeanor—sitting casually, such as with one leg draped over the other, is considered disrespectful at such a holy site and should be avoided.[2]
