The Daily Halacha Moment - Speech & Shabbat 🗣
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
Where does it come from that one's speech on Shabbat should not be like the weekday?
Answer:
The pesukim in Yeshayah 58:13-14 state as follows:
"אִם תָּשִׁיב מִשַּׁבָּת רַגְלֶךָ עֲשׂוֹת חֲפָצֶיךָ בְּיוֹם קָדְשִׁי וְקָרָאתָ לַשַּׁבָּת עֹנֶג לִקְדוֹשׁ ה' מְכֻבָּד וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ מֵעֲשׂוֹת דְּרָכֶיךָ מִמְּצוֹא חֶפְצְךָ וְדַבֵּר דָּבָר. אָז תִּתְעַנַּג עַל ה' וְהִרְכַּבְתִּיךָ עַל בָּמֳתֵי אָרֶץ וְהַאֲכַלְתִּיךָ נַחֲלַת יַעֲקֹב אָבִיךָ כִּי פִּי ה' דִּבֵּר."
"If you restrain your foot because it is the Shabbat; refrain from accomplishing your own needs on My holy day; if you proclaim the Shabbat ‘a delight,’ and the holy [day] of Hashem ‘honored,’ and you honor it by not engaging in your own affairs, from seeing your own needs or discussing the forbidden – then you will delight in Hashem, and I will mount you astride the heights of the world; I will provide you the heritage of your forefather Yaakov, for the mouth of Hashem has spoken.”
From these pesukim, the Chachamim derived that one must honor Shabbat both in our actions and our speech. [1] This includes not only walking in a certain manner, but also not speaking about things that one would normally speak about during the week, and even what one reads. These restrictions were instituted to enhance the holiness of the Shabbat and our reverence for it. In the next couple of days, we will Bezrat Hashem be discussing more Halachot regarding this category.
