Question:
May one use a tea filter or coffee cone on Shabbat?
Answer:
It is permitted to place a coffee cone or tea filter on top of a cup, add tea or coffee grinds, and then pour water directly on the tea or grinds (if there is no issue of Bishul), even though the filter will then separate the coffee or tea from the grinds and leaves, this is not considered Borer, since the separating is happening by itself once the water becomes mixed with the tea or coffee, the person who poured the water has not
done any other action other than pouring water, which is permitted. In such a case, one should be careful not to shake the filter, because then one would be performing an act of Meraked[1] which will be discussed in a future Halacha Moment.
