The Daily Halacha Moment - Using a Flosser or Toothpick on Shabbat 😁
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
May one use a Flosser or toothpick on Shabbat?
Answer:
One may pick his teeth with a toothpick, even if one will cause himself to bleed. However, one should try his best to avoid causing bleeding. [1] Similarly, it is permitted to remove a splinter that has penetrated one’s skin, even if doing so may cause some bleeding. If possible, one must attempt to avoid causing any bleeding while removing the splinter.
[2] Many Ashkenazim are stringent, one should follow one's custom.
Furthermore, for those who permit one to brush one's teeth on Shabbat (while following the correct requirements which Bezrat Hashem will be discussed in a future Halacha Moment) If one will definitely cause himself to bleed when one is brushing his teeth then he should not brush his teeth on Shabbat. [3] Many Ashkenazim are stringent, one should follow one's custom.
