The Daily Halacha Moment - Walking During Shema
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
May one walk during Shema?
Answer:
It is forbidden to walk while reciting the first pasuk of Shema ("Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad") and Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto LeOlam Va’ed, as these are the most central declarations of Hashem’s unity and kingship, and they require complete stillness and focused attention. [1]
In fact, some authorities adopt an even stricter approach and rule that one should not walk at all during the recitation of the first paragraph of Shema, continuing to remain stationary until after the words "Al levavecha" in the VeAhavta paragraph. [2]
Furthermore, during the recitation of the first paragraph of Shema (from "Shema Yisrael" through "Al levavecha"), it is forbidden to engage in any other activity whatsoever. This includes performing any form of work, making gestures or signals with one's eyes or fingers, or mouthing words with one’s lips that are unrelated to the Shema. [3] Even subtle forms of distraction, such as nonverbal communication, are prohibited during this critical part of the prayer, as they detract from the full concentration and wholehearted acceptance of Hashem’s kingship that the Shema demands.
