Chopping Food For Animals On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Chopping Food For Animals On Shabbat 🐶 🍲

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one crush or chop food for a animal on Shabbat?

Answer:

It is permitted to crumble bread in order to feed one’s chickens or pets such as a bird or fish, even if the bird or fish will not immediately consume it. However, it is preferable to only do so before the regular time that they are fed. Similarly, it is permitted to finely cut meat in order to feed it to one’s animal.[1]
