Question:
My lens fell out of my glasses frame may I put it back in the frame on Shabbat?
Answer:
As we've explained in a previous Halacha Moment the melachah of Makeh BePatish is completing an item.
That being said, an eyeglass lens that popped out may not be snapped back into place on Shabbat. Even in extenuating circumstances, one should be stringent and not even put the lens back in a loose fit. If possible, one may ask a non-Jew to snap the lens back in place on Shabbat, especially if one needs the glasses for learning Torah or praying. [1]
Regarding a plastic frame that holds the lens in place without a screws, Some hold that if the lens popped out and the frame is pliable, allowing the lens to be reinserted without difficulty, one is permitted to replace it in the frame. If, however, the frame is firm and the replacement is difficult, then it is forbidden. [2] One should follow ones custom.
Similarly, one may place contact lenses in their solution on Shabbat, since this is not considered fixing, but rather a preventative measure in order that they should not dry out. [3]
