How To Tear Keriyah Upon Seeing The Kotel

The Daily Halacha Moment - How To Tear Keriyah Upon Seeing The Kotel

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

How does one tear keriyah upon seeing the Kotel?

Answer:

Strictly speaking, when tearing one’s clothing upon seeing the Kotel, one is required to tear all of his garments [1]. However, the common custom is to tear only one garment [2]. If a person does not wish to rip his jacket, he should remove it and tear only his shirt [3]. One should tear the garment with his hand, not with any utensil [4]. The tear should measure a tefach in length and be made on the left side of the chest [5]. This keriah should be done unaided and while standing [6]. Once the garment has been torn, the tear should not be sewn up [7].
