The Daily Halacha Moment - Learning During Chazarat HaShatz
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן
העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What are the halachic guidelines for behavior during Chazarat Hashatz?
May one learn during Chazarat Hashatz?
Answer:
Those who are meticulous to fulfill the mitzvah of wearing both Tefillin of Rashi and Tefillin of Rabbenu Tam should be careful not to remove their Rashi Tefillin and put on the Rabbenu Tam Tefillin during Chazarat Hashatz. [1] This is because Chazarat Hashatz requires complete attention and participation, and any form of distraction or interruption even for a mitzvah related activity shows a lack of proper respect for the sanctity and purpose of the repetition of the Amidah.
Chazarat Hashatz was instituted by Chazal in order to fulfill the obligation of those who may not be able to daven on their own, and as such, the chazan’s repetition is treated with the same level of seriousness and kedusha as Shemoneh Esrei itself. Therefore, to treat it lightly or to engage in other matters while it is being recited is considered a severe offense. In fact, speaking during Chazarat Hashatz is deemed by the poskim as a grievous sin. [2] The gravity of this transgression is not limited only to those who are actively participating in the minyan; even one who is merely present in the room, and not currently davening with that specific congregation, must refrain from talking during the repetition. [3]
Moreover, it is also improper to use the time of Chazarat Hashatz for learning Torah, reciting Tehillim, or even saying other parts of davening that one may have missed earlier. [4] While Torah learning and tefillah are obviously precious and central avodot, engaging in them prevents one from answering amen and being part of the minyan.
