The Daily Halacha Moment - Pulling Out Hairs Without Explicit Intention on Shabbat 🧔

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן

העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one do an action that will pull out hair without explicit intention? (for example removing a bandaid)

Answer:

One may scratch the inside of his nose or ears even if one may pull out some hairs while doing so.[1]

One may wash his face even though one may pull out some beard hairs in the process.[2]

It is very praiseworthy to refrain from stroking one’s hair or beard on Shabbat because one may pull some hairs while doing so. However, strictly speaking it is permitted to do so.[3]

One may remove a Band-Aid on Shabbat even though one may pull out some hair while doing so. However, one who doesn’t have an absolute need to do so on Shabbat, should wait until after Shabbat to take off the Band-Aid.[4]
