The Daily Halacha Moment - Running On Shabbat 🏃

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What are some cases where one may run on Shabbat?

Answer:

In a previous Halacha Moment, we've discussed based on the pesukim in Yeshayah that one shouldn't run on Shabbat. However, it is permitted to run for a mitzvah, such as in order to get to the synagogue or to get to a Torah class. [1] Similarly, It is permitted to run or jump if one enjoys doing so. [2]

Children may play jump-rope or games that involving running or jumping on Shabbat. [3]

It is permitted to run in order to prevent anguish, such as if one needs to run away from a wild animal, or if one is running in order to not get wet from the rain. [4] Similarly, one may run away from a place where there are women who are dressed immodestly or if someone is speaking lashon hara. [5]

Based On R' Yonatan Nacson's Laws Of Shabbat With Some Additions.
