Question:
Does tochen apply to items not grown from the ground?
Answer:
It is permitted to chop cooked meat or cheese with a knife into very small pieces, even if one’s intention is not to eat it immediately. This is permitted since Tochen does not apply to an item that does not grow from the ground.[1] Similarly, It is permitted to use an egg slicer on Shabbat to slice a hard-boiled egg. [2]
Furthermore, It is rabbinically prohibited to grate cheese or meat with a grater. One may also not grind meat with a utensil that is used primarily for grinding even prohibited if one is doing so for immediate use.[3]
