Toveling Vessels on Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Toveling Vessels on Shabbat 🥣 🥤

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one Tovel vessels in the Mikveh on Shabbat?

Answer:

As we've mentioned in a previous Halacha Moment the melachah of Makeh BePatish is completing an item and we know that one may not use a vessel until it is immersed in the Mikveh.

That being said, one who has a utensil that requires immersion in a mikveh, should preferably first try to give it as a present to a non-Jew and then borrow the item back from him. Doing so circumvents the issue of having to immerse the item. If this is not possible, then according to Sephardic custom, a person may immerse an item in a mikveh on Shabbat. Even according to Ashkenazim, who generally do not allow one to immerse an item on Shabbat, there is a possibility to immerse an item if it is done in a manner whereby it is not obviously evident that one is immersing the item in order to make it usable, but rather it only appears as if one is dipping the item as if to draw out water.
