What Is A Makom Kavuah?

The Daily Halacha Moment - Makom Kavuah

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What exactly is a Makom Kavuah?

Answer:

One should establish a makom kavua—a fixed place—for tefillah, and make an effort to consistently pray in the same seat and the same shul. [1] This halacha specifically applies to the Shemoneh Esrei, which should ideally be recited from a designated spot each day. [2] If one is unable to attend shul and must pray at home, it is still proper to designate a specific place in the house for tefillah. [3] Having a set place, even at home, creates a sense of sacred space and helps foster greater concentration and reverence during prayer.

However, if there are people near one's regular seat who are talking or causing distractions, it is recommended to temporarily pray in a different location within the shul where it is quieter. [4] The purpose of a makom kavua is to enhance kavanah, not to compromise it, so moving for the sake of better focus is acceptable.

Additionally, if a guest is already sitting in your regular seat, you should not ask them to move. [5] Causing discomfort or embarrassment to another person, especially a guest, is more serious than the loss of one's makom kavua. In such a case, it is better to choose another seat and preserve peace and respect rather than risk offending someone.
