Joining A Minyan From An Adjacent Room

The Daily Halacha Moment - Joining A Minyan From An Adjacent Room

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

Can one join a minyan from an adjacent room?

Answer:

If there is a minyan of 10 men in one room, and someone is davening in an adjacent room, he may still answer Kaddish, Kedusha, and Barchu, and according to many poskim, his tefillah is considered Tefillah B’tzibbur — as long as he can hear the congregation. This applies even though he could not be counted among the initial ten required to form the minyan [1]. However, many other authorities disagree, holding that it is not considered Tefillah B’tzibbur unless the person is physically present in the same room and able to be part of the actual minyan [2].

When it comes to connecting two rooms, if there is a larger room and a smaller room that is completely open to the larger one, and the majority of the minyan is in the larger room, then the spaces are considered one unified minyan. However, if the majority of the minyan is in the smaller room, the rooms do not combine to form a valid minyan [3].
