The Daily Halacha Moment - Minimizing Shabbat desecration for a Choleh Sheyesh bo Sakanah
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
Does one need to minimize Shabbat desecration for a life-threatening situation?
Answer:
When performing a melachah for a person who is considered a choleh sheyesh bo sakanah (Life-threatening sickness), one should perform the melachah in the regular way, without the use of a shinuy (not the usual way). [1]
Melachot that are not directly related to the treatment of the dangerously ill person should be done with a shiny (not the usual way). For instance, a doctor who needs to write a prescription for a person who is considered dangerously ill should write with a shinuy, such as with his left hand.[2] Similarly, one who needs to call an ambulance for a choleh sheyesh bo sakanah should use a shinuy when dialing the phone number, only if it will not cause any delay by doing so.[3]
If one is required to cook food for a person who is considered a choleh sheyesh bo sakanah, it is preferable that he should cook the food in a microwave or electric stovetop instead of using a gas stove. However, one
should not go out of his way to do so if a gas stove is readily available, so that one should not delay helping the person who is ill. [4]
