Mouse Traps On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Mouse Traps & Shabbat 🐀

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one place a mousetrap on the floor on Shabbat?

Answer:

Interesting question, placing a trap in a place where animals are common is biblically prohibited if immediately after placing the trap, an animal was trapped. However, if the animal only becomes trapped after some time after placing the trap, then it is only rabbinically prohibited. [1] It is nevertheless permitted to place a mousetrap on Shabbat or even leave poison out, since one does not need the mouse for anything once it is trapped, and it does not happen immediately. [2] Many Ashkenazim are stringent regarding placing a mousetrap, one should follow one's custom.
