The Daily Halacha Moment - Dangerous Animals & Tzad 🐯
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Does the Melachah of Tzad apply to dangerous animals?
May on trap dangerous animals on Shabbat?
If an animal or insect can cause serious harm, even if it is not life-threatening, it is permitted to trap them on Shabbat, provided that one is trapping them with the intention to be saved from being injured by the animal or insect.
However, one may not trap a snake in order to use its venom or in order to use its skin, even though the snake is dangerous. That being said, one needs to be honest with himself with regards to what really is dangerous.
. Shulchan Aruch 316:7. See also in Yabia Omer, vol. 1, 21:3 and vol. 5, 32:1. Yalkut Yosef, Shabbat, vol. 2, p. 543 adds that it is permitted to trap an animal, such as a snake, if one is afraid of being bitten, even if the snake is not currently chasing after anybody.
. Shulchan Aruch 316:7-8.
