Question:
What is the mitzvah of lighting the Menorah?
Who lights the Menorah?
Answer:
The Gemara states that one who is scrupulous with the kindling of the Chanukah lights will be rewarded with children who are Torah scholars. [1]
There are essentially three levels of observance regarding the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah lights:
Strictly speaking, the halachah requires one to light one light on each night of Chanukah, in every household. [2]
The second way prescribed is called mehadrin: when lighting mehadrin, each household member lights one light every night. The third, and preferred, method is called mehadrin min hamihadrin, in which one light is lit on the first night, and an additional light is added each subsequent night, until eight lights are lit on the last night. The Ashkenazic custom is for each household member to light mehadrin min hamihadrin.
The Sepharadic custom, however, is only for the head of the household to light mehadrin min hamihadrin on behalf of the household. [3]
