Separating For A Animal On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Separating For A Animal On Shabbat 🐶 🍲

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one separate for an Animal on Shabbat?

Answer:

It is permitted to separate food that can be used for human consumption from food that is meant for animal consumption. Therefore, if one wants to separate fat from meat or bones from the food in order to give it to one’s dog, it is permitted to do so but one must only do so immediately before feeding it to the dog. [1] Similarly, it is permitted to separate ochel from pesolet, such as nuts from the shells, in order to feeds one’s pet, but this too may only be done immediately prior to feeding the animal.[2]

[1]. Ben Ish Chai, Beshalach 2:14 states that when doing Borer for the use of an animal, one should only do so discreetly, unless it is obvious that it is being done for the animal. However, Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 4, p. 186; Halichot Olam, vol. 4, p. 88 states that one does not have to do so discreetly. See also Piskei Teshuvot 319:27.
