Question:
May one own a vending machine that's operated on Shabbat?
May one rent a store to a jew who will keep the store open on Shabbat?
Answer:
One who owns snack or soda machines may leave them running on Shabbat, even though someone may buy from them on Shabbat. It is praiseworthy that the owner of the machine should stipulate before Shabbat that he does not want to acquire the money that was deposited on Shabbat until after Shabbat. [1]
Strictly speaking, one may rent a home or store even to a Jew who will be keeping his store open on Shabbat on the condition that the Jew could also rent a similar store in the area from a non-Jew just as easily. However, if he is in an area where only Jews live, and they are likely to come and buy from the store on Shabbat as well, then one should not rent the store to such a person and cause potential sin to the public.
