Working Out On Shabbat

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

The Daily Halacha Moment - Working Out & Shabbat 💪🏻

‎״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one work out/exercise on Shabbat?

Answer:

Strictly speaking, one who exercises, such as doing crunches or pushups etc.., and does so for pleasure, and not in order to break a sweat, is permitted to do so on Shabbat or Yom Tov [1]. However, there are many poskim including Maran Ztzl who write that one should not do so, since it is not in the spirit of Shabbat [2].

Even according to the more lenient opinions, a person may not lift weights on Shabbat, or run in a way that one is trying to break a sweat. [3] Running would be permitted only if one derives pleasure from doing so, but not in order to sweat. [4]

Based On R' Yonatan Nacson's Laws Of Shabbat With Some Additions.
